DIY hard drive replacement is a great way to get comfortable working on the innards of your home PC.

Here's how it's done:

1. turn off the power to the PC

2. remove all plugs and cords from the back of the PC. Notice that the cables can only be placed in their own like kind receptacles so confusing them on re-installation is a non issue.

3. place the PC on a work towel or something soft to protect the opposite side of the PC.

4. remove the side panel where there is a handle or set of screws that look like they were placed for easy removal. (all PC's are different) Be careful not to move or bump other components inside the PC case.

5. Find the HD or hard drive. It should be a metal box that has two cables coming out the back. One cable is the power and goes to the power supply the other is likely a SATA or IDE cable that connects to the motherboard. Remove the cables and remove the drive from the case. Read the HD to make sure you have a hard drive and not another PC component. Look for a storage capacity like 320GB, 500GB, 1TB etc.

6. Installing the new hard drive should be done in reverse order. For simplicity sake buy a hard drive that is the same physical size as your old one so that it can fit in the same location within the case. There are other options such as a SSD or solid state drive and these are great but their size may be different than the drive removed. If you chose a different type of drive or size of drive you may need to purchase a mounting bracket to fit the old slot on your case.

7. With a brand new HD you will not have an operating system on the drive. Using a product install disc such as Windows 7 will walk you through the process. After installing the drive; plug all your components and cables back in and turn on the power.

8. You will be taken to a boot options screen where you are warned "no operating system present", or something to that effect. Go into the BIOS by restarting the PC again and change the boot order so that the computer will boot from the optical drive first.

9. Install the Operating system disc into the DVD or CD drive.

10. Restart the PC again.

11. Your OS (operating system) install should begin. Follow the instructions as it walks you through the process.

12. After the install is complete you should be able to reinstall your backed up data from the backup program that you use. If you did not use a backup program your data is possibly lost.

There are some companies that can extract the data from ruined hard drives -just search for them in any search engine.

Installing a hard drive is a simple and fun project to try. You will be surprised at your resourcefulness and glad you saved the money by doing it yourself.

With 21st century technology, one of the greatest gifts given to us would be the flat screen TV.

Such considerations are not needed for brick walls and you can drill the mount screws in.

Finally, to hide the wiring, the cheapest and most effective way would be to hide it behind, say the furniture that the home theater is kept on, or anything similar. Alternatively, one can consider running it through the walls by drilling holes (a professional electrician is recommended for brick walls).

For offices, it is recommended that Flat Screen Installation should be done by professionals. Just bear in mind: The TV should be elevated so as to give a clear view to all. The elevation should not cause discomfort (optimum height consideration). Speakers should be installed at corners for maximum coverage.

Many people are getting tired of having a big entertainment stand taking up space in their living room holding the TV. This could take up space and give your living room a condensed look and feel. Many new flat screen TVs have a bracket that you can purchase that will allow you to attach them to the wall. Be careful because improper installation can send your new TV crashing to the floor. Here are some tips that will help you mount your television to the wall safely and allow you to have more space in your living room.

Speaker Mounting Brackets

Before you decide to purchase the mounting brackets, look at the back of your LCD flat screen TV to make sure you can connect it to the wall via that method. If there is a bracket on the back you have nothing to worry about but if not you are going to need a different type of wall mount fitting. There are wall mounts that can even handle the old style sets that will let them be mounted on the wall. Careful observation will determine which style you need to attach your model to the wall in your home.

After you have the right brackets, find a wall that you wish to hang your device from, that will give the best viewing angle. Choose a wall that is going to give you the best picture quality so the light does not interfere with the screen and so everyone can see it. Now that you have located the best position, look for a stud in the wall. Use a stud finder so you can make sure that the mount is going to be securely bolted to a wall stud. Attach the mount to the wall and to the back of your television using the correct bolt holes via the supplied wall fixings and bolts. Now all you have to do is to sit back and enjoy viewing your wall mounted set.

Ceiling mounted Speaker entertainment systems

Getting theatre quality sound is very simple as long as you know what you are doing and know where you want your surround sound speakers to be mounted. Just putting speakers in the ceiling is not going to work because you want the best sound quality you can in your room. Instead of hiring a professional to install the system, you can do it yourself and save money in the process. Before you get started on everything in your home, purchase the system you want making sure it is recommended for speakers mounted in the ceiling. You can find these systems at any electronics store ranging in price depending on the quality and brand of the system.

Before you start installing the speakers, look in the ceiling to make sure you are not cutting through any wires. When you are cutting the holes for the speakers, measure the diameter of the speakers so you know how big the holes need to be. If the holes are too big, the speakers are not going to be mounted right and not sound like they should. Some ceiling speakers come with a canister that you can mount in the ceiling, then the speaker fits within this fixture neatly.

After the mounting brackets are fixed to the ceiling, run the speaker wires into the canister and to the stereo. You want to measure the length of the wires from the stereo to the speakers to make sure you have enough wire to reach the speakers before cutting your wire. Too much wire is not a bad thing but not enough is an obvious problem Leave the wires unhooked from the stereo so that you can make sure you are hooking the speakers up to the right channel on the sound system. Label each wire by the stereo to give you a better idea of which speaker is which. After all of the wires are run and ready to be connected to the speakers, time to connect the stereo and blast out your favourite music track!
